Introduction: -
To understand what Digital Marketing Is, we must know the history and evolution of
Internet. In this first chapter we will discuss the Basics of digital marketing and things to consider developing your own Digital Marketing Strategy after the completion of this course.
So, as we all know the Internet was designed by the US army during the second world war with the fear of losing all the important data present in the country in case they were attacked by any other country. Earlier data transmission was possible only through copper wires led between two computers. But, when the task was to transmit data over large distances this strategy failed miserably. So, they came up with a technology called “Fiber Optics.” Data transmission through these cables were incredibly fast and even today we use the same technology! Yes, even today data transmission over larger distances is not possible without Fiber Optics cable.
Earlier, the internet was only meant for government officials and not for the public. But as the time passed, internet was made available to the public too. With as little as just “one” Website at that time to billions of websites nowadays, the journey to the modern internet was just incredible. But, let’s just not discuss about the evolution of the Internet, let’s now discuss about the evolution of “Digital Marketing”.
With the time, the internet market saw an ocean of potential customers coming only and their number keeps increasing day by day! On an average until 2030 almost 98% of the world’s population will be online. In the present-day scenario, 76% of the total internet users use Google as their search engine. We say it 76% because some countries like china and Russia prefer using their own search engines considering their own security aspects. And this 76% of users are BILLIONS in number!
This astonishing number of potential customers attracted large Industries and companies to advertise and promote their product online. Earlier, the media for advertising any brand was limited to television, newspapers and radio but these media cost larger sums of money to operate. Even now, the cost of advertising through those media is much higher than that of Internet Marketing. On a general note if the cost of advertising a certain brand “A” is $1000 on T.V. $800 on Radio and $750 on Newspaper, the same advertisement on Internet Marketing will cost them only $400.
Advantages of Digital Marketing: -
· Reduced Cost of Advertising a brand as compared to television, radio or newspapers.
· Highly targeted impact on the audience. The kind of audience can be configured based on the business and requirements.
· The amount of leads coming from different places (such as Google, facebook, twitter, pinterest, youtube, Instagram) can be monitored in real-time.
· This measurement gives us an option to manage our revenue more efficiently and design our future campaigns.
· Proportional boost in business sales and leads.
· The business website ranks at the top of Google search results seeking more customer visits.
Scope Of Digital Marketing:
The scope of "Digital Marketing" will never ever die even in the future. Because, marketing can only evolve not die! As the world has seen, In earlier times Marketing used to happen with the "Words of Mouth". For Example: If a person had a requirement of "X" object, he used to go to the market and made an analysis of the best product available in the market and then made a purchase. But this wasn't the end of Marketing. He then went back to his home and during supper he met his best friend, say nikhil, who has the same requirement of the object "X". After knowing his Nikhil's requirements, the person suggested to go to the same shop where he went and bought the same object. This was the form of marketing that used to happen at the beginning.
Then, gradually after the coming of Printing machines te form of marketing moved to banners and posters. People began to promote their brand and products through custom printed posters and banners which is still now in use.
Then came the turn of other media such as Newspapers, Television and Radio. The coming of these technological advancements changed the way marketers used to promote their products. In fact, this gave the world a whole new opportunity to "Market" their product "Digitally" and hence people started calling this as "Digital Marketing".
Hope the Concept of Digital Marketing is clear to most of you, But for those who still have doubts on this chapter can surely post your questions in the comments. Thank You!
